Oxygenates

£0.04

Oxygenates are fuel additives that contain oxygen and are used to improve combustion and reduce emissions. They are usually in the form of ethers or alcohols.

Examples of oxygenates Ethanol, Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), Ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE), and Tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME).

Description

How oxygenates work

  • Oxygenates promote complete combustion
  • They can enhance fuel combustion and reduce exhaust emissions
  • Some oxygenates can boost gasoline octane
  • They can be found in some gasolines at concentrations of up to 15% by volume
Other uses of oxygenates

  • Oxygenates can be used in the production of formaldehyde, acetic acid, fuels, solvents, and methyl derivatives
Research on oxygenates
  • The oil and motor industries have carried out considerable research into the use of organic oxygenates as blending components in gasoline
  • The American Petroleum Institute (API) provides technical information on fuel oxygenates in soil and groundwater
